Student placements

We offer a range of placements depending on your age and objectives.

All students offered a placement must be able to provide their own steel toe capped boots and dark blue overalls.

Placements available include:

  • 14 - 16 years of age
  • 16 years of age and over
  • Placements for students requiring additional support

Please note:

All students on placement are required to carry out a DBS check prior to starting their placement.

14 - 16s work placements

We do offer student placements for those ages 14 - 16 year olds if it is organised as part of your school curriculum. We offer placements from just one week.

Types of activities you might take part in while you are on placement

  • Helping the keepers look after the animals
  • Preparing feed for the animals
  • Maintaining the grounds – including sweeping, weeding etc.
  • Helping the hosts look after our guests, helping handle the animals in the PETALZ barn
  • Helping our education team with encounters, handling Shetlands, goats and donkeys
  • Helping with school trips
  • Fundraising
  • Conservation awareness days

 

Placements are on a first come, first serve basis and are limited to one student placement each week.

Aged 16 and over placements

We offer a range of placements from one day per week to longer periods depending on what your commitment and requirements are.

Preference is given to Animal Care/Management students and Veterinary students.

 

How To Apply

If you would like to apply please read the booklet below which explains the application process. Please print, complete and return the relevant application form below. Please also complete and return the confidential medical questionnaire found below and send it to us with your application.

who will be in contact to arrange an informal interview and tour of the zoo prior to agreeing to the placement.

16 and Over Work Placement Application Form: Please send the completed form to admin.kirkley@northland.ac.uk

 

Please note

You must attend one of our monthly zoo tours prior to undergoing a work placement at Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens where you can ask any questions you may have, you will find out more information regarding dates and times once you have applied.

If you would like to discuss a particular student placement that requires support or a more specific placement outline please get in touch to see how we can help.

We have helped lots of students to gain confidence and experience in a safe and comfortable environment where their support workers can come along too.
